MCNAIR EVANS IS A COMMERCIAL, EDITORIAL, AND FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHER BASED IN RICHMOND, VIRGINIA.
McNair grew up in a small farming town in North Carolina, and worked summers repairing cross-ties and railroad tracks on a 32-mile freight line. He discovered photography through anthropology, honed his craft for 15 years in San Francisco, and recently relocated with his family to Richmond, VA. His projects explore themes of shared experiences and identity and are recognized for their literary character and metaphoric use of light. McNair’s vision emphasizes evocative, precisely composed moments that feel intimate, authentic, and immediate.
McNair is a nationally exhibiting artist, an active guest lecturer at universities and institutions nationwide, and currently represented by galleries in San Francisco, CA and Asheville, NC. He is the recipient of numerous awards including a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship, the Innovation in Documentary Arts Award from Duke University, and the John Gutmann Photography Fellowship.
His books and prints are held in public and private collections including the SMOMA, UC Berkeley Art Museum & Pacific Film Archive, and the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library at Yale University.
